Planning for the Pacific Crossing:

Fuel planning, sail repair, rig checks, courtesy flags, charts, weather and currents, ITCZ location, radio scheduling, documentation for various countries, weight distribution on board, spare parts, provisioning, etc. are all part of the planning involved in making the first leg of the Pacific Crossing – about 2700 nautical miles from Puerto Vallarta to the Marquesa Islands.

We have associated ourselves with some other boats that will be doing the crossing in 2008. We all share information and tips – both in person and via email or the web. This is a loose grouping of sailboats – all leaving at different times and from different places from San Diego to Panama and the Galapagos – called the “Pacific Puddle Jump Group" by Latitude 38 Magazine. Several of the friends we have made along our travels so far will be making the crossing this year as well. It’s a big ocean, so it will be good to know some of the other boats which will be scattered across it as they each make their way to the Marquesas.

There is no more generous, interesting and diverse a group than the cruising community. And boy it is a small one. Two examples: it seems every fourth boat we meet knows the O’Neill’s of s/v Shibui; and the owner of a boat with whom we had an anchoring "disagreement" turns out to be the brother-in-law of long-time friends from Greenwich, CT. -- Go figure.
