Most places we have visited have no electricity, to say nothing of internet. However, cell phones are everywhere. Local Ni-Vans just plug into the village generator (if there is one) for the hour it is on every night.
One island, has over 28 different languages in a area of approx. 60 miles by 20 miles. What a place! We have been having one fascinating experience after another. We are now on the barter system, as cash seems to have less value by many of the people we have met -- this makes sense as there are no stores from which to buy things anyway.
